i am alive!

After being at the mercy of crazy safari jeep drivers in Dasada, sitting here blogging about it is a privilege in itself.

I've finally organised my photos on Brad (that's what I call my mac, after Brad Pitt, because it's so sexy) so I'm really happy now because if I can't control the chaos around me at least I can create my own semblance of order in whatever way I can. If there is anything that will drive me out of my mind here, it will be the absence of order, efficiency and certainty. My Singaporean-engineered brain is wired this way so I'm not apologising for my irritability when I have to wait 6 weeks just for wire transfer to arrive.

Anyway, on a brighter note, quite a bit has happened since my last entry. As part of the module "Imagining India" that we were duped into taking because of the interesting title, we went on a field trip to a mosque. Around 10% of the population in Ahmedabad are Muslims and from googling I found out that most live in poverty because there is discrimination when it comes to owning property. Apparently Muslims cannot buy or rent property in Hindu parts of town so the two communities live separately and in fear of each other. Thankfully we have not and I hope we will never need to experience any sort of trouble during our stay here. Anyway, the Muslims provide the beef, so yea we should be grateful for that.

(At this point we are experiencing one of the occasional power failures for half a minute of which everything shuts down, including the wireless network because the modems run on electricity.)

The frenchies have showed us the single most important place in this town - The Chocolate Room!!!

Me looking very contented with my waffles with ice cream. Imagine eating mess (dining hall) food consisting of mystery gravy and rice/naan three times everyday, and you will be absolutely delirious when you step into this piece of heaven and whiffs of chocolate greet your olfactory glands. Mmmmm...bliss.

This is the menu for their hot chocolate drinks. They also have chocolate pizzas, chocolate "sundaes", chocolate pancakes, waffles with chocolate ice cream, among other delectable sets. My waffles and ice cream costs about $3.80. (Rs26=S$1)

After that we had dinner at a restaurant called "Hot 'N' Frozen"...yes,this place is seriously confused. The frenchies had their first taste of pork in three months. I had rice with prawns but it was a pity that I couldn't finish it because I was so full of chocolate by then.

(Ok, just had another blackout. And someone's screaming. If anyone gets raped here nobody will know because we get random screams every so often and it's impossible to tell the difference between a genuine cry for help and happy screams.)

Time for lunch! I will be updating about our safari to Dasada sanctuary later. For now I shall stop being anti-social and take a look at what's going on outside in celebration of Makar Sankranti, the kite festival to mark the beginning of crop season.

Oh btw, the wonderful blog header was designed by Mr Erwin Nah. I really love it : )
